A campaign to put a recreational marijuana legalization initiative before voters in Michigan got the green light from state election officials to start collecting signatures.

The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol announced that the state board of canvassers signed off on its initiative language, clearing the way for the group to start gathering the 252,523 signatures of registered voters that it needs to make the 2018 ballot. The group has 180 days in which to submit at least that many to qualify for the ballot.

Reports from New Mexico’s seed-to-sale tracking system show that five of the state’s medical cannabis businesses actually sold roughly 200,000 grams of MMJ more than they grew January through March.

A review of quarterly MMJ reporting documents by the New Mexico Political Report found the biggest discrepancy with Giving Tree Organics, which sold nearly 28 pounds, or about 13,000 grams, more than they produced.

Another MMJ business, The Harvest Foundation, grew about 64,000 grams January to March but sold about 70,000 grams, a difference of about 10 pounds.

How the discrepancies came to be and who’s

The FBI says a Michigan restaurant owner was willing to pay bribes to suburban Detroit officials to try to get them to allow him to open a medical marijuana dispensary.

The disclosure was made in a document filed this week in federal court. The government wants to keep $15,000 that was voluntarily turned over to agents by an unidentified Garden City official. No charges have been filed.

The FBI says the restaurant owner told the Garden City official that he would pay $150,000 if he could get a permit for a medical marijuana dispensary.

Medical marijuana dispensary workers in Canada have joined a union in what some are calling a first for the country, borrowing a page from organized labor in the United States.

According to the Canadian Press, workers at Canna Clinic, in Toronto’s east end, have joined Unifor, the country’s major private-sector union. Canna Clinic has four more locations in Toronto plus clinics in Vancouver.

The Canadian Press reported that some 40 workers, including production, packaging and retail staff, are now unionized.

The next step is for the union to negotiate a contract with Canna Clinic,

Put it in the record books: A medical marijuana company in Hawaii has become the first in the state to harvest its initial crop.

But the state lacks an approved lab to test the cannabis, slowing the rollout of Hawaii’s MMJ program.

According to Pacific Business News, Aloha Green Holdings – based in Oahu – said this week it harvested the marijuana from an indoor grow facility.

Along with Pono Life Sciences and Maui Wellness Group, Aloha Green began growing cannabis in February. Hawaii has licensed eight vertically integrated MMJ businesses.

A federal appeals court in San Francisco sidestepped making a ruling on whether U.S. prison officials can hold a cannabis business owner who was convicted of marijuana offenses that were legal under state medical marijuana laws.

In a decision Wednesday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals focused instead on a narrower issue.

The court was considering a legal challenge by prisoner Matthew Davies, who was convicted of federal marijuana charges. Davies said he ran medical marijuana dispensaries that complied with California law.

He argued that the Bureau of Prisons could not
